In honor of World Press Freedom Day, journalists from Kaberamaido District joined hands with local stakeholders including Kaberamaido Hotel, the Resident District Commissioner, District Administration, Ogonya Mixes Farms, and the administration of Kaberamaido General Hospital for a unique initiative aimed at giving back to the community. The collaborative effort saw them engage in a day of cleaning and tree planting at Kaberamaido General Hospital.
Against the backdrop of advocating for press freedom and acknowledging the crucial role of journalism in society, the journalists of Kaberamaido embraced a hands-on approach to demonstrate their commitment to community development. Partnering with local stakeholders, they ventured beyond reporting to actively contribute to improving the environment and public health facilities.
The day commenced with collective efforts to clean the premises of Kaberamaido General Hospital, symbolizing dedication to ensuring hygienic conditions for patients and staff. Working side by side with the Resident District Commissioner and the security team, the journalists exemplified the spirit of collaboration and civic responsibility.
Mr. Justine Etabu, the manager of Kaberamaido Hotel, emphasized the importance of media-business connections, stating that businesses rely on the media to connect with customers and attract guests to hotels.
Hospital administrator Mr. Joseph Esiru expressed gratitude for the cleanup and tree planting, highlighting the benefits of a cleaner environment and the role of trees as windbreakers. He called on journalists to make such initiatives an annual tradition to preserve the environment.
Resident District Commissioner Lino Lotem commended the journalists for their initiatives and urged for wider advocacy to encourage environmental conservation in every home in Kaberamaido District, emphasizing the importance of tree planting to mitigate environmental degradation.
Following the cleanup activities, the group transitioned to a tree planting initiative within the hospital grounds. Recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability, they planted a variety of indigenous trees, beautifying the area and promoting ecological balance.
This remarkable display of solidarity between the media, local businesses, government bodies, and security forces underscores the interconnectedness of different sectors in fostering positive change within communities. Journalists from Kaberamaido demonstrated proactive engagement in addressing pressing social and environmental issues, embodying the spirit of press freedom.
