Kaberamaido Technical Institute recently held its Annual Cultural Gala, a vibrant event that showcased the rich cultural diversity of its student body. The celebration brought together students from various tribes, each presenting their unique cultural heritage through traditional dances, attire, customs, food, and dress codes. This lively display of traditions underscored the institute’s commitment to unity in diversity and cultural pride.
Deputy Principal of Kaberamaido Technical Institute, Mr. Boniface Ninsima, emphasized the importance of integrating culture into educational institutions. “There should be culture in the institutions,” he noted. Mr. Ninsima called for increased community sensitization to help members understand the value of preserving cultural practices. He assured attendees that the school administration would continue to support the annual gala and promote student associations such as LASA, TESDA, KURAS, and BASDA, which play a crucial role in nurturing and showcasing talent.
Reverend Eimu Elia, Minister of Culture for Kumam Cultural Heritage, stressed the need for cultural education both in schools and at home. “Our children should be taught about their culture so that they grow up with an understanding of their roots,” he said. Reverend Elia expressed concern over the diminishing knowledge of local Kumam food and traditions, urging communities to pass on this knowledge to younger generations to preserve their heritage.
Deputy Minister for Environment, Mr. Patrick Epilu, encouraged students to contribute to environmental conservation. “I urge you to plant trees when you go back home during holidays to help preserve our environment,” he said, highlighting the connection between cultural identity and environmental stewardship.
The chief guest of the event, Mr. Patrick Edyelu, representing His Royal Highness Raphael Otaya, spoke on the importance of respecting school property and fostering a sense of community. He commended the government of Uganda for its continued support of the people of Kaberamaido and called on parents to enroll their children at the institution, noting that many students currently come from other districts in Uganda. “Students should inform us if there is anything amiss so that we can address it promptly,” he added.
The Annual Cultural Gala at Kaberamaido Technical Institute served as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural education and unity. The event not only celebrated the diverse backgrounds of the students but also reinforced a sense of community and collective responsibility for heritage and the environment.
