Rwandan President Paul Kagame has signaled his readiness to engage in talks with the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, regarding the persistent crisis in eastern DRC. However, the specific date and venue for the meeting are yet to be finalized.
The announcement of Kagame’s willingness for dialogue emerged during his recent visit to Luanda, Angola’s capital, where he held discussions with Angolan President Joao Lourenco. The breakthrough was made public by Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio following the leaders’ meeting.
Both Rwanda and the DRC have embraced the idea of a dialogue, with ministerial delegations from both countries actively working towards its realization, as disclosed by Antonio.
Kagame’s trip to Angola comes in the wake of Tshisekedi’s visit at the end of February, during which the Congolese leader expressed his readiness to meet with his Rwandan counterpart.
Lourenco, acting as the mediator appointed by the African Union, has been spearheading efforts to bring the two leaders to the negotiating table. Despite the mediation efforts, concrete dates for the meeting have not yet been announced. The mediation initiative aims to address the recent surge in conflicts in eastern DRC, notably involving the resurfacing March 23 Movement (M23), and to mend strained relations between Rwanda and the DRC.
Accusations from the DRC have implicated Rwanda in supporting M23 rebels, allegations vehemently denied by both Kigali and the M23 group. The resurgence of the rebel faction in late 2021 has exacerbated conflicts and humanitarian crises, leading to the seizure of significant strongholds within Congolese territory.
The impending meeting between Kagame and Tshisekedi holds promise for constructive dialogue aimed at quelling tensions and fostering stability in the volatile eastern region of the DRC. As diplomatic efforts intensify, stakeholders remain hopeful for a sustainable resolution to the protracted crisis, ensuring the well-being of affected populations and restoring peace to the troubled region.
