KAMPALA – The Bishop of Karamoja Diocese, Rt. Rev. Michael Chorey, received a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, donated by President Yoweri Museveni, to support his pastoral duties. The vehicle, white in color, was handed over by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo at her office in Kampala. This donation fulfills a pledge made by the President during Bishop Chorey’s consecration ceremony on August 25, 2024, in Moroto District. The event was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Mugalu Kaziimba, and attended by various church leaders.
During the brief handover ceremony, Vice President Alupo congratulated Bishop Chorey on his election and consecration. She encouraged the diocese to promote socio-economic transformation among the people, urging Christians to engage in commercial agriculture, industries, ICT, and services to create wealth and jobs. She reaffirmed the government’s strong partnership with the Church and other faith groups, emphasizing the shared goal of mobilizing communities to fight poverty.
Bishop Chorey expressed his gratitude for the vehicle, stating that it would enhance his ability to serve the Diocese. He pledged to work closely with the government to transform lives through initiatives in commercial agriculture, food security, peace, and poverty alleviation. The Bishop also acknowledged the President’s efforts in bringing relative peace to Karamoja, enabling free movement and development in the region. He emphasized the Church’s role in continuing this partnership to foster unity and security.
Bishop Chorey concluded by reiterating the Church’s vision to build a strong, active, and united community of faith. He called for collective efforts to achieve this, inspired by their shared commitment to Christ.
The handover ceremony was attended by State Minister For Gender Labour and Social Development, Davinia Esther Anyakun, the district chairperson of Amudat, and church leaders from the Karamoja Diocese.
Biodata of Rt. Rev. Michael Chorey
Before his election as Bishop, Rt. Rev. Chorey served as the Archdeacon of Pokot Archdeaconry from April 1, 2012, and was the Parish Priest for Christ Church Amudat Parish. Born on April 10, 1970, in Dingdinga village, Katabok sub-county, Amudat District, he accepted Christ on May 12, 1986. Ordained as a Deacon in 2003 and as a priest in 2005, he is married to Rev. Canon Jane Chorey, and together they have established 24 churches under Pokot Archdeaconry.
Rev. Chorey holds a Master of Arts in Theology and Development, and a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University. He is completing his Ph.D. in Theology and Development at the same university and has undergone extensive training in various fields, including leadership at the Anglican Leadership Institute in South Carolina, USA.
