KARENGA, UGANDA – In a significant turnaround, Karamoja’s long-standing food crisis is nearing its end, thanks to improved security in the region. The Resident District Commissioner of Karenga, Mr. Ocailap Geoffrey Filbert, has expressed optimism about the declining insecurity levels, stating that with security guaranteed, “the food problem will be history in Karamoja.”

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has played a pivotal role in restoring stability and peace, allowing for impressive agricultural productivity in Karenga. The region has witnessed abundant production of maize, sorghum, and other crops, improving food availability.

However, disturbances from individuals in neighboring Kenya remain a challenge. “We are working closely with our Kenyan counterparts to address this issue,” said Mr. Ocailap.

The Special Presidential Assistant(SPA) on Political Affairs Caroline Angolere in her passionate speech highlighted the transformative power of farming in promoting peace and sustainable livelihoods in Uganda’s Karamoja region.

For years, the region has grappled with climate change, food insecurity, and conflict, but Angolere believes that supporting local farmers and investing in climate-resilient agriculture can be a game-changer.

By doing so, the region can create jobs, improve food security, and reduce tensions that often lead to conflict .

Tourism has also surged in the region, with Kidepo Valley National Park attracting around 10,000 visitors annually. Chief Warden Richard Muhabwe attributed this growth to effective disarmament initiatives. “The park’s impact on the region is significant, including the development of vital infrastructure like schools and hospitals.”

Government initiatives, such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, have substantially improved living standards in the region. Mr. Abukongimole Samuel Lobeka, Secretary for Health and Education, praised these programs, saying, “They have made a significant difference in the lives of our people.”

The success of these initiatives is a testament to the government’s commitment to eradicating poverty. With continued efforts, Karamoja is poised to overcome its food crisis and achieve sustainable development.
