The ministry of works has pronounced 20th December 2024 as opening date for Karuma bridge, currently undergoing reconstruction.
The state Minister for Works Musa Ecweru on Saturday morning inspected the bridge works and updated the public that government is me raining it’s deadline of 20th December.
Mr. Ecweru commended the valuable work so far done by the Engineers and confirmed the steady progress.
“I want to appreciate the government’s commitment in restoring the conference of travelers, I can affirm that those intending to travel to celebrate Christmas to different destinations shall officially use this rout”, Mr. Ecweru mentioned.
The original bridge, built in 1963, was found to have structural defects, including corrosion and erosion. The bridge’s deck, beatings and were also beyond their expiry date.
The 11 Billion project includes removing the concrete deck, providing new formwork, and installing new reinforcement bars and concrete, however the report currently show the work progress at 85 percent says the Minister Ecweru.
Mr. Bongomin Charles the Deputy Resident Engineer National Roads Authority assured their commitment in opening the bridge for road users, all vehicles and buses except trailers as the sets to its completion.
“We give already covered 85 Percent of the works, the finishes can be done when the bridge in use”, he said.
Karuma bridge connects the Acholi West Nile and Mango Sub- region to the rest of Uganda.
