Kampala Capital City Authority has rescued 161 children from the streets today Tuesday 19th September 2023. The City Authorities were working in partnership with NGOs, including Dwelling places and Baana ministies.
The city has immediately commenced the trial and prosecution of six adults who are accused of dealing in child trafficking.
These 161 children are now on their way to Kobulin Youth Rehabilitation and Skilling Center in Napak District, Karamoja sub-region. The Director Gender community services and production for KCCA , Sheila Birungi Gandi, was on site to oversee the operation. She said that “KCCA enforcent teams make street searches on a weekly basis. These children will be handed over to the Ministry of Gender team in Napak for onward rehabilitation,” she said.
The rehabilitation protocol includes counselling for settlement, skilling in different skills. In the last three years, KCCA has rescued over 750 children from the streets. Some children were settled in UWESO in Masulita while others were taken back to Karamoja.
Since 2022, KCCA has been implementing the KCCA child protection ordinance, 2022, which prohibits participation in facilitating the stay of these children on the street. 56 adults have been procecuted from the time this ordinance was put in place.
