Kotido, Uganda – November 22, 2024
Nakere Rural Women’s Activist (NARWOA) has concluded a two-day community sensitization meeting in Panyangara and Kotido sub-counties, addressing pressing environmental concerns, disasters and hunger. The event Sensitization on disaster prevention mechanisms funded by Global Fund for Women and USAID in partnership with Women’s International Peace Centre, brought together local leaders, farmers and community members.
Environmental degradation, hunger and insecurity topped the agenda. Deforestation, charcoal burning and uncontrolled grazing sparked concerns as primary causes of disasters. Residents emphasized the urgent need for sustainable practices to mitigate these issues. They recognized the interconnectedness of environmental degradation, hunger and insecurity, and the necessity for collective action.
To address environmental degradation, residents proposed peace initiatives through inter-community dialogue. This approach aims to reduce raids, promoting stability and security. Sustainable agriculture was another key strategy, focusing on commercial farming, tree planting and energy-saving practices. Disaster preparedness measures, including early warning systems and water diversion channels, were also discussed.
LC3 Chairman, Panyangara Mr. ILukol Denis, emphasized supporting government initiatives, environmental protection and prioritizing peace. “Our collective action will ensure a sustainable future,” he stated. Local leaders pledged to champion sustainable practices, mobilize resources and foster community engagement.
NARWOA’s continued efforts will focus on sensitizing communities on disaster response mechanisms under the Climate Justice Project. Community-led initiatives will promote resilience, improve livelihoods and protect the environment. The organization’s dedication to empowering local communities underscores the critical role of grassroots initiatives in driving positive change.
The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Participants acknowledged community-led initiatives’ critical role in driving positive change. This collective commitment marks a significant step toward mitigating environmental degradation, hunger and insecurity in Panyangara and Kotido sub-counties.
