Kotido, Uganda – A two-day training and formation of climate clubs has concluded in the sub-counties of Panyangara and Kotido, aimed at strengthening community resilience to climate-related shocks and stresses.
The activity, facilitated by Project Officer Anero Florence Apuun, brought together community members, local leaders, and other stakeholders to discuss the impacts of climate change and develop strategies for mitigating its effects.
The activity is being implemented by Nakere Rural Women Activists (NARWOA) in partnership with Women International Peace Centre with funding from USAID and Global Funds for Women
According to Anero Florence Apuun, the project aims to promote climate-resilient agriculture, improve water management, and enhance disaster risk reduction and management. “The project seeks to strengthen the resilience of communities to climate-related shocks and stresses,” she explained.
During the training, participants learned about the causes and effects of climate change, as well as strategies for adapting to its impacts. They also formed climate clubs, which will serve as platforms for sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The climate clubs will also provide a forum for community members to discuss and address climate-related challenges, such as drought, floods, and landslides. “The climate clubs will be instrumental in promoting climate-resilient agriculture, improving water management, and enhancing disaster risk reduction and management,” Anero Florence Apuun said.
The activity was well-received by the community, who expressed their gratitude for the training and the formation of the climate clubs. “We are grateful for the training and the formation of the climate clubs,” said one of the participants. “We are committed to working together to address the challenges posed by climate change.”
The project is expected to benefit over 1,000 households in the sub-counties of Panyangara and Kotido. The partnership between Women’s International Peace Centre, USAID, and Global Funds for Women is a significant step towards promoting climate resilience and empowering communities to address the challenges posed by climate change.
