The recent upheaval in Kumi District’s Muslim community underscores significant tensions surrounding the leadership of District Kadhi Sheikh Abdul Wahab Kauta.
The conflict, characterized by accusations of corruption, forgery, and gross incompetence, has led local Muslim leaders to call for an urgent impeachment process and a return to dialogue for community healing.
The discord escalated on February 16, 2025, during a heated meeting where Sheikh Kauta faced vehement criticism from community leaders.
As the allegations of misdeeds came to light, including the questionable leasing of prime Muslim land along Kumi-Tirinyi Road and involvement with Turkish investors without proper approval, the situation culminated in a confrontation.
Yusuf Aisu, Treasurer of the Kumi Muslim Council, stated that a commission of inquiry was put in place to scrutinize the allegations against Kauta.
Following the commission’s report in August 2024, the recommendation for Kauta’s impeachment was forwarded to the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Ramazan Mubajje.
Aisu emphasized that Kauta’s continued presence in office is unconstitutional per the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s regulations.
Vice Chairperson Rashid Opolot reinforced the call for Kauta’s departure, stating that the council can no longer tolerate his conduct. He tagged Kauta’s alleged mismanagement as destructive to community trust and unity.
As members of the community grow increasingly polarized, some advocate for patience and dialogue, hoping that swift action will lead to the reinstatement of good governance and restore stability within Kumi’s Muslim population.
When reached for a comment, Sheik Wahab ceased to give a comment on media and turned violent to the press.
The unfolding situation embodies the challenges facing many faith communities in maintaining leadership integrity and the need for transparent governance to foster unity and trust among followers.
As the council awaits a resolution from the Mufti, there remains a collective hope for reconciliation and a return to coherence in managing community affairs.
