As Catholics and Protestants begin their 40-day Lenten journey of prayer and fasting today, Wednesday, March 5, Orungo county MP hopeful Teddy Anyuk Osire has encouraged them to seek God’s presence, which provides strength and hope during this period.
While visiting all seven sub-counties in the constituency, Anyuk called on Christians to prioritize forgiveness and share love for one another, as commanded by the Holy Spirit during these 40 days of prayer and reconciliation with God.
“Today marks a unique day as Catholics and Protestants enter Lent. I humbly appeal to all people of the Lord in the Teso sub-region and worldwide to have genuine hearts while seeking God’s presence and let His love prevail upon those who have started their 40-day fasting period nationally,” Anyuk said.
In an interview, Osire urged Christians to resist temptations that may divert their attention from focusing on God’s presence. “I know there are hardships during Lent, but I implore Christians to stay committed to God’s presence, ensuring a successful period.”
Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, and spiritual reflection. On this day, Christians attend church services, where a priest or minister applies ashes to their foreheads in the shape of a cross. These ashes, made from burnt palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday, symbolize human mortality and repentance.
According to Anyuk, “During this Lenten period, I encourage us to reflect on our major requests to God and present them to Him again, as He is the provider of all things.”
