Lira, Uganda – The Ministry of Health has successfully completed the construction and operationalization of a state-of-the-art Satellite Laboratory at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, a major milestone aimed at strengthening diagnostic capacity in northern Uganda.
The facility, valued at UGX 4.5 billion, will be officially commissioned on Friday, March 14, 2025, in a ceremony presided over by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Minister of Health and Woman MP for Lira City.
This newly established laboratory is equipped with advanced diagnostic machines that will enhance the region’s ability to diagnose and manage a wide range of diseases. It will offer routine diagnostic tests in microbiology, biochemistry, and hematology, ensuring improved accuracy and efficiency in patient care.
Crucially, the facility will also focus on specialized testing for infectious diseases that pose significant public health risks, such as COVID-19, Ebola, and Marburg fever. Given the increasing threat of emerging diseases, this laboratory will play a critical role in disease surveillance and outbreak response, helping health authorities detect and contain infectious diseases more effectively.
Beyond diagnostic services, the Lira Satellite Laboratory is set to serve as a regional hub for public health research, training, and mentorship. Health professionals from across northern Uganda will benefit from specialized training programs, enabling them to enhance their skills in laboratory medicine and epidemiology.
The commissioning ceremony on March 14, 2025, at 10 AM is expected to bring together key stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Health, representatives from Lira City leadership, and members of the health sector. The event will provide an opportunity for discussions on further strengthening healthcare services in the region.
The Minister has urged all relevant authorities, including the Resident City Commissioner (RCC), City Health Officer, and District Police Commander, to prepare for the event and ensure its smooth execution.
The completion of the Satellite Laboratory at Lira Regional Referral Hospital is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Uganda. It aligns with the Ministry of Health’s strategic vision of enhancing disease detection, response, and management across the country.
For residents of Lira and the broader Lango sub-region, the facility represents hope for faster, more accurate diagnoses and a stronger healthcare system capable of handling complex medical challenges. Uganda takes a significant step forward in modernizing its healthcare infrastructure and strengthening disease control mechanisms in northern Uganda with the upcoming commissioning.
