At the opening of the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly in Abu Dhabi, UAE, local and global leaders convened to address the urgent need for a transition to renewable energy.
Among the panelists was Hon. Oguzu Lee, the Member of Parliament for Maracha County, who passionately advocated for a just energy transition.
This year’s session, themed “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” emphasized the critical importance of energy security, socio-economic development, and innovative financing solutions.
During the Legislators’ Forum, Hon. Oguzu highlighted the disproportionate impact of energy emissions on the poor in developing countries and called for initiatives that alleviate these burdens.
The MP underscored the significance of supporting nations like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, which hold vast potential for renewable energy development.
He argued that such partnerships are crucial for these countries to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and ensure universal access to affordable energy by 2030.
In tandem with the Legislators’ Forum, the IRENA Youth Forum, titled “The New Generation of Decision Makers,” created opportunities for young leaders to engage with policymakers and experts.
The forum aimed to strengthen youth networks, empowering the next generation to participate meaningfully in the global energy conversation through interactive workshops, debates, and collaborative sessions.
A key focus of both forums was the need to combat illicit financial flows that contribute to fiscal deficits in Africa, which are estimated to cost the continent up to $80 billion annually.
Hon. Oguzu emphasized the necessity for global assistance in addressing this issue to ensure a sustainable and inclusive energy transition in Africa.
Success stories from around the globe were shared, including Uruguay’s achievement of securing $6 billion in energy investments, attaining almost total energy independence, and reducing energy tariffs through renewable initiatives.
These examples provide valuable lessons for other nations, showcasing how renewable energy can drive economic growth and sustainability.
The 15th IRENA Assembly highlighted the pressing need for a just energy transition that prioritizes the needs of vulnerable populations in developing nations.
By focusing on energy security, addressing illicit financial flows, and empowering youth voices, the global community can pave the way for a sustainable and equitable energy future for all.
The assembly will conclude on the 13th with a General Assembly of members, marking an important step forward in global collaboration for renewable energy solutions.
