Residents of Soroti City woke up to scenes of tension and disruption as a massive security operation unfolded around Equity Bank earlier this morning.
Both Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) and police forces were swiftly deployed, creating an atmosphere of intrigue and concern throughout the town.
The operation was initiated following reports of a group of thieves managing to infiltrate the premises of Equity Bank, sending shock-waves through the usually tranquil city.
As authorities mobilized to contain the situation, traffic along the main streets of Soroti ground to a halt, causing inconvenience to commuters and bystanders.
According to ASP Obukulem Eddison, the acting public relations officer for the East Kyoga region, authorities received information from the community around 3 a.m. prompting them to cordon off the area. Initial reports suggested that the security guards stationed at the bank had falsely claimed to have been overpowered by the intruders.
“At around 3:00am, we received information from the public that there was an attempted robbery at equity bank, so our patrol cars that were in operation both rushed to the scene to secure the bank property from the assailants,” Obukulem said.
Adding, “We launched the investigations and shall brief the public on further developments.”
