On Sunday, August 25, 2024, State Minister for Teso Affairs, Clement Kenneth Ongalo, officially launched the 2024 Technical, Vocational, and Farm Institutes National Championship at Kaberamaido Technical Institute. During his address, Minister Ongalo emphasized the unifying power of sports and its critical role in economic development and national liberation, citing the recent Olympic Games in Paris as an inspiring example.
Serving as the chief guest for the opening ceremony of the 9th edition of the National Vocational and Farm Institute Sports Championship, Minister Ongalo spoke passionately about the impact that sports can have on individuals and the nation as a whole. He highlighted the achievements of Ugandan sports legends like John Akii-Bua, who won a gold medal for Uganda, and Joshua Cheptegei, who recently secured victory in the 10,000 meters race at the Paris Olympics. Minister Ongalo underscored that sports provide valuable learning experiences, contributing significantly to the overall education of students. He also expressed his gratitude to the Commissioner of Physical Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports for selecting Kaberamaido Technical Institute as the host for this prestigious event. In his closing remarks, he urged the local community to be welcoming and to exhibit exemplary behavior towards the visitors.
Victor Rex Ekesu, the District Chairperson of Kaberamaido, expressed his excitement about the district hosting the 9th edition of the National Technical, Vocational, and Farm Institutes Sports Association (NTEVOFASIA) Championship. The one-week event, which commenced on Wednesday, has attracted 40 institutes from across the country. The first day of the event kicked off with athletics, where participants showcased their talents in various track and field events. As the championship progresses, additional sports disciplines, including football, netball, and volleyball, are expected to take center stage, with institutes from various districts competing for top honors.
Rev. Canon Dr. Duncans Mugumya (PhD), the Commissioner of Physical Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, took the opportunity to caution Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) against the misuse of funds allocated by the ministry. He highlighted that this event serves as more than just a competition; it provides students with a platform to network, exchange ideas, and further develop their skills. Dr. Mugumya reiterated the importance of integrating sports into education, emphasizing that it plays a crucial role in the holistic development of students.
Kaberamaido Technical Institute has spared no effort in ensuring a successful and memorable championship for all participants. According to NTEVOFASIA General Secretary Joel Mick Adomati, the organizers are expecting a total of 40 institutes to participate in this year’s championship. The event, which has become a key fixture on the national sports calendar for technical and vocational institutes, aims to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and talent development among students. Adomati also noted that Minakulu Technical Institute from Oyam District is among the eagerly anticipated participants, with their debut set for tomorrow.
