Lira, Uganda – Dr. Jane Aceng Ochero, the Minister of Health and Lira City Woman MP, has commissioned an intensive care unit (ICU) ambulance and an emergency operating centre (EOC) at Lira Regional Referral Hospital. The event took place on Thursday, July 4, during which the minister also inspected the progress on the construction of a cutting-edge emergency operation theatre ward, an oxygen plant, and an ambulance call and dispatch centre.
Speaking at the site, Dr. Aceng highlighted the importance of the new ICU ambulance in referring critically ill patients to Mulago National Hospital for specialized treatment. “Due to limited resources, the Ministry of Health is starting with a few ambulances and plans to acquire more over time. This specialized ambulance will provide urgent care and transport for critically ill patients, offering safe and comfortable transportation during life-threatening situations,” she said.
Currently, these ambulances are available at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, and Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.
Dr. Aceng announced that the ambulance call and dispatch centre is set for completion in August 2024, enabling rapid ambulance services across all Lango districts through a centralized communication system. The oxygen plant will also be completed in August 2024, while the laboratory is scheduled for completion in September 2024.
Following the commissioning, Dr. Aceng launched a two-day Lango Regional Health Camp at Margarita Palace Hotel in Lira. The event drew officials from all local governments in the Lango sub-region and other stakeholders. During her speech, Dr. Aceng announced the health ministry’s plans to commence construction of the Lira Regional Blood Bank and renovation works at Apac General Hospital, with funds already secured for these projects.
Dr. Nathan Ongaci, the Hospital Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, said the health camp aims to create awareness of the services offered at the hospital. However, he noted challenges such as understaffing and land encroachment.
Dickens Kennedy Odongo, the Alebtong LC5 Chairperson and chairperson of all LC5s and mayors in Lango, praised Dr. Aceng for her efforts in ensuring the health of the people in the region. He acknowledged the significant investments announced, saying, “The significant investments announced today signal a new era in health for Lango, improving access and quality of care for the entire community. Thanks to Dr. Jane Aceng for the great work, without political boundaries.”
