Moroto, Uganda – The Ministry of Water and Environment has inaugurated Water and Environment Week in Karamoja, launching a series of activities to promote hygiene and environmental conservation. The initiative aims to engage the community in sustainable practices and highlight the importance of sanitation in public spaces.
The week kicked off with ministry officials and development partners undertaking a general cleaning exercise at Moroto Central Market. The effort involved removing solid waste, unclogging drainage trenches, and sweeping the area, underscoring the significance of maintaining cleanliness in public markets.
Wilson Tabaaro, Manager of the Water for Production Regional Centre in Karamoja, emphasized the focus on hygiene during the week’s activities. “One of the key activities of Water and Environment Week is general cleanliness. We reached out to our partners, and I am happy with the great turnout, which reflects the strong collaboration between the Ministry and stakeholders,” said Tabaaro.
Paul Loduk, the Moroto Central Market Master, commended the initiative, stating, “I am overwhelmed by how clean the market is now. I thank the Ministry of Water and Environment staff and development partners who participated in the exercise. The market produces a lot of waste, so it is encouraging to see volunteers step in to help.”
Following the clean-up, development partners toured the Ministry’s regional building complex, which is currently under construction. Tabaaro described the tour as an opportunity for partners to assess progress. “This building will house offices for regional staff and improve the efficiency and coordination of the Ministry’s activities,” he explained.
The Water and Environment Week is being commemorated under the theme: “Water and Environment Resources for Enhanced Resilience and Improved Incomes and Livelihoods.” The activities throughout the week will focus on environmental conservation, sanitation, and community engagement to promote sustainable water management.
The week’s events will culminate in a Menstrual Hygiene Run on March 15, with proceeds supporting girls in Karamoja. This initiative aims to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and provide resources to improve the well-being of girls in the region.
The Ministry of Water and Environment’s efforts reflect a strong commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability and public health in Karamoja. The collaborative spirit shown during Water and Environment Week sets a positive example for communities across Uganda.
