Soroti City: The Woman Member of Parliament for Soroti City, Joan Alobo Achom has handed over a water facility to the area locals of Arapai Ward in Soroti city West Division, who had faced water crisis for a longer time.
The piped water project aims to ease access to water by households, especially those in lower settings that had not been reached by National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC).
Speaking during the handover of piped water to the locals of Mugana Cell and Opauber Trading Center, Alobo said that the achievement is her total commitment to deliver services to her electorates and enhancing government’s efforts in bringing services closer to the people.
“I thank the National Water and Sewerage Cooperation for collaborating with me in speedily delivering the water to the outskirts of Soroti city. We have spent a period of one year since we commenced pipelining water in February last year,” she said.
Adding: “The issue of water scarcity has been burdening women of Arapai Ward due to inadequate water sources in the area. The overwhelming population has been struggling with the few boreholes, which dry off during the spell.”
Amos Oleja, the LC.1 Chairman of Opauber market area, told this website that his people, especially women, are now relieved from trekking for longer distances looking for water for domestic use.
He said, “we have been registering multiple cases of domestic violence resulting from women spending much time out of their homes in search for water, Alobo’s achievement automatically offers a solution since water is now brought to people’s door steps.”
Francis Ejangu, the LC.1 Chairman of Mugana B Cell in Arapai Ward, commended Alobo for her dedicated efforts in uplifting the common persons.
“Yes she has done what touches everyone in my locality especially women, this tapped water shall be of great benefit to my community for a life time and this I challenge other top leaders to deliver services that touch the local person,” he said.
Zipporah Amoding, one of the vendors in Opauber Market, hailed the Woman MP for securing water, especially for them traders.
“I brew alcohol to sustain my family and pay school fees for my three children. This water will now support my business since it’s a necessity in my business,” she said.
According to Alobo, the project has costed her Ushs 50 million, ranging from the paperwork, surveying, mapping and digging the pipe lines.
Other wards she intends to stretch the connection include Opiyai, Acetgwen, Otatai, Opuyo, Aloet and Agora which are all expected to cost Shs 300,000, 000.
