Joan Achom Alobo, the Soroti City Woman Member of Parliament, has been charged along with 12 others in connection with the burning and destruction of Jozan Nursery and Primary School. They on Monday appeared before the Soroti Chief Magistrate, facing charges of arson, malicious damage, theft, destruction of school buildings, and inciting violence.
The Incident occurred on March 6, when a group of angry individuals stormed the school to protest the court’s handling of the murder case of Jian Faith Apio, whose body had been found locked in a pit latrine. The mob action led to the school’s destruction, causing significant financial losses.
Other suspects include individuals aged 18 to 54, with accusations that Alobo incited the group to burn the school. Despite the allegations, the suspects denied the charges.
Alobo was granted bail, with a 10 million shilling non-cash and 2 million shilling cash bond, and her sureties were Soroti District Woman MP Anne Adeke Ebaju and Soroti City East Division Mayor Paul Omer.
Alobo had been arrested on March 7 during a protest named “No Cow, No Vote” in Soroti City East, alongside FDC party President Patrick Amuriat Oboi and others.
The case surrounding Jozan Nursery and Primary School continues to raise public tension, with many calling for swift justice for Joan Faith Apio.
