Alupo Mercy Marion, a candidate vying for the Bukedea Woman MP seat, has publicly denounced the “Sole Candidate” narrative, describing it as undemocratic and detrimental to the development of the region. Alupo emphasized the importance of competition in ensuring that leaders are accountable and that alternative development strategies are presented to the electorate.
“The narrative of being a sole candidate is undemocratic and should not be tolerated. Let the people contest so that alternative options for development are brought up. If we all cry and shout unopposed, what democracy shall we be portraying?” Alupo challenged.
Alupo, who is recognized for her advocacy for women’s empowerment and youth involvement in politics, further criticized the sole candidate agenda for contributing to a range of issues affecting the region. She pointed to the lack of clear cattle compensation, the expansion of land grabbing, and the entrenchment of political indiscipline as direct consequences of stifling healthy competition.
“The sole candidate agenda has denied us clear cattle compensation, has expanded land grabbing, and has entrenched political indiscipline where allegiance has shifted to the state rather than to the constituencies,” she asserted.
Alupo also touched on the need for accountability among top political figures, noting that while positions such as Vice President and Speaker are valuable for the region, they must also be held to high standards of service. “If they worked and served the electorates, they will be sent back,” she stated.
She expressed concerns about the erosion of constitutional principles, highlighting the removal of term limits, age limits, and the buying off of opposition as signs of the growing political indiscipline in the country.
“We can’t transform this country by stifling healthy competition. The people of Kumi and Uganda at large deserve leaders who are willing to stand up for their rights and provide real solutions to their problems,” Alupo concluded.
As the race for the Bukedea Woman MP seat intensifies, Mercy Alupo’s message of democracy, accountability, and development is expected to resonate with voters seeking change in their leadership.
