The fishing community of Mulondo Landing Site in Labwor Sub-county is abuzz with hope and optimism following a remarkable gesture from Ambrose Olupot, the aspiring Member of Parliament for Pingire County. On Monday, Olupot delivered ten bags of cement to help the fishing community complete their much-needed offices and storage facility near the lake shore. This act of generosity has been hailed as a demonstration of true leadership, one that prioritizes community welfare and development.
Musa Okalebo, the Mayor of Labwor, lauded Olupot’s actions as a sign of a leader whose heart lies with the people. “This is what leadership should look like – responding to the needs of the community with action and care,” Okalebo stated, emphasizing how such contributions ignite hope for a brighter future.
According to Peter Koluo, Olupot’s campaign manager, the gesture was in direct response to cries from the community about their struggle to complete the facility. The fishing community had previously built the structure with limited resources to house their fishing gear and serve as a central office.
For decades, the residents of Mulondo Landing Site have grappled with challenges ranging from poor sanitation to limited access to clean water, education, and healthcare. Peter Ikajora, a boda boda rider and long-time resident, described how these challenges have hindered progress. “The biggest issue here is access to clean water and proper sanitation. Education is another problem, as many children abandon school to fish in the lake,” Ikajora said. “We need leaders like Olupot who take action rather than make empty promises.”
Stella Rose Apio, a businesswoman who has lived at the landing site for over 20 years, echoed these sentiments. “The biggest challenge here is poor sanitation, with human waste scattered everywhere. Health services are almost non-existent, and education standards are poor,” she lamented. “Olupot’s gesture to support the completion of our facility is a sign that there are leaders who care.”
Olupot’s manifesto revolves around three key pillars: poverty alleviation through SACCOs, improved education standards, and enhanced healthcare access. He envisions a Pingire where every child has access to quality education, health services are within reach, and poverty is addressed through sustainable economic opportunities.
Senior citizen Olego, who has spent his entire life in the area, praised Olupot’s approach. “This structure we are building is by the fishing community, for the fishing community. Olupot’s support has shown us that there are leaders who value our efforts and want to uplift us,” Olego remarked.
Hellen Betty Ajao, another resident, shared her optimism. “For the first time, we feel seen and heard. If Olupot can deliver such hope as a candidate, imagine what he will do as our Member of Parliament. We are hopeful for better schools, improved healthcare, and access to clean water and sanitation.”
As election day draws closer, the people of Mulondo Landing Site are rallying behind Olupot, viewing him as a symbol of action and hope. His willingness to listen and respond to the needs of the community has reignited their belief in leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the people. With leaders like Olupot stepping forward, the residents of Labwor Sub-county are hopeful that their children will have better schools, their families will access quality healthcare, and their community will thrive in an environment with improved sanitation and clean water.
