- President Museveni Reiterates Commitment to Empowering Persons with Disabilities
President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to promoting the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across Uganda. Speaking through Vice President Jessica Alupo at the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrations in Kumi District, Museveni emphasized the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) commitment to inclusivity and equal access to services for PWDs.
Museveni highlighted the NRM’s efforts to address the historical injustices faced by PWDs, including overcoming cultural and social barriers. He urged Ugandans to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent disabilities, emphasizing the importance of antenatal care, immunization, and responsible living.
The president also encouraged households to engage in wealth-creating activities, such as commercial agriculture, industries, and services, to improve their economic status. He noted that the government has created favorable conditions for businesses to thrive, including good roads, electricity, peace, and security.
Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Betty Amongi stressed the need for Ugandans to promote health campaigns, particularly for expectant mothers, to prevent disabilities.
State Minister for Disability Hellen Grace Asamo reported that the national special grant for PWDs has funded over 7,000 enterprise groups, benefiting 55,799 households.
The celebrations were held under the theme “Improved Household Income for the Wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities.”
