Nakapiripirit, Uganda -The Electoral Commission’s national voters register update exercise officially commenced today in Nakapiripirit District, with the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), George E. Owanyi, flagging off the event. The ceremony was held at the Electoral Commission district offices and was attended by various stakeholders, including the EC District Returning Officer, Mr. Mike Okello; the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Mr. Wadada Lawrence; and the District Internal Security Officer (DISO), Mr. Wazamba Edward.
The exercise, which will run from January 20 to February 10, 2025, aims to update the voter register by removing deceased individuals and those who have migrated out of the district, while adding new voters who have attained the age of 18 and migrants who have settled in the district. This exercise is crucial in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the voter register, which is essential for conducting free and fair elections.
In his remarks, RDC Owanyi emphasized the importance of the exercise, urging citizens to participate and cooperate with the Electoral Commission officials. “This exercise is a noble civic duty, and I encourage all eligible citizens to register and exercise their right to vote,” he said.
The Electoral Commission officials also took the opportunity to sensitize the public on the importance of the exercise and the requirements for registration. They explained that all eligible citizens, including those who have attained the age of 18 since the last general elections, are required to register. They also emphasized that the exercise is free and voluntary, and that all registered voters will be issued with a voter’s card.
During the 2021 general elections, Nakapiripirit District had 32,345 registered voters, with 22,049 voting for candidate YK Museveni of the NRM. The update exercise is expected to increase voter participation and ensure the accuracy of the voter register.
The Electoral Commission is mandated by the Constitution and the Electoral Commission Act to compile, maintain, revise, and update the National Voters Register. The exercise is a crucial step in preparing for the 2025/2026 General Elections.
The public is encouraged to participate in the exercise by visiting their nearest registration center and presenting the required documents, including a national ID or a letter from the LC1 chairman. The Electoral Commission officials will be available to assist and guide the public throughout the exercise.
