Kaberamaido District – The construction of a ferry in Kaberamaido District, expected to be completed by May 2021, faced delays due to rising water levels in Lake Kyoga and the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Mr. Victor Rex Ekesu, the Kaberamaido District Chairperson. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony site in Bukungu Landing Site in Buyende District, State Minister for Transport Mr. Fred Byamukama assured that the ferries would support economic activities in the area. The ferries, initially inscribed with “BKK” representing Bukungu-Kagwara-Kaberamaido, are now slated for completion by March 2023, promising affordable and safer water transport for residents of the three districts.
However, Ekesu expressed concern over Terrian Services Limited abandoning the site, citing Uganda National Road Authority’s failure to deposit 2.7 billion shillings as requested. Currently, residents pay varying fees for Moto boat transport, ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 shillings, hindering business operations and access to essential services.
Local leaders, including Mr. Charles Ojuku, Sub County Chairperson of Ochero, voiced dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the project, now extended beyond the initially promised timeframe. Ojuku emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to expedite the project’s completion before the 2026 general elections. Ms. Esther Arebo, a hotel operator, highlighted the financial strain imposed by high transport costs, limiting business opportunities and access to markets.
Mr. Charles Olima from Akokoma Village expressed concerns over the lack of progress despite assurances of ferry operation by March 2023, fearing potential abandonment of incomplete structures. He urged the government to fulfill its manifesto promises, emphasizing the project’s potential to benefit Ugandans and international businessmen alike.
