The controversy surrounding Captain Mike George Mukula’s claims of personally funding initiatives to beautify Soroti City has sparked intense debate. Mukula, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairman for the Eastern Region, alleged that he personally funded efforts to improve cleanliness and aesthetics in the city. However, this assertion has been met with criticism from various sectors, including members of the Iteso Cultural Union.
The controversy arises from the fact that the government allocated 2.3 billion shillings for the Ateker Re-Union festival, which was hosted in Soroti City. Sources within the Iteso Cultural Union revealed that 120 million shillings was specifically allocated for cleaning and beautifying the city. Mukula’s claim of personal investment in the beautification efforts includes activities like cleaning, planting new flowers, and enhancing the city’s overall appearance.
Members of the Iteso Cultural Union have accused Mukula of undermining the contributions of President Yoweri Museveni and the broader governmental efforts.
Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, a cultural leader, dismissed Mukula’s claims as detrimental to the integrity of the government’s involvement. Emorimor emphasized the need for accountability and urged Mukula to clarify his statements.
The ongoing situation is exacerbated by allegations that Mukula is positioning his son to run for Parliament in Soroti City East Division. This could indicate a broader political strategy linked to leveraging recent positive developments in the region. As the narrative unfolds, the implications for Mukula’s political future and the relationship between the NRM and the Iteso Cultural Union remain to be seen. Emorimor is anticipated to meet with President Museveni to discuss future projects, including the construction of the Iteso Palace, further highlighting the ongoing collaboration between cultural and governmental entities.
Attempts to reach Captain Mike Mukula for comment on the issue were futile.
