Renowned Witchdoctor Emmanuel Akiteng, alias Butaleja, has been arrested by police in Oyam district over allegations of killing six people in Nwoya district. The victims reportedly died after stealing 19 sacks of sim sim from a local resident, sparking allegations of witchcraft.
According to Odong Francis Opyio, the officer in charge of operations in Oyam district, the victims’ relatives reported the matter to Nwoya Central Police Station, prompting a joint operation between Nwoya and Oyam police that resulted in Akiteng’s arrest. Akiteng, who hails from the Teso Sub Region, was found hiding in a chilling board in his residential house at Western Ward in Loro Town Council, Oyam district.
Opyio explained that Akiteng’s girlfriend played a crucial role in his arrest, leading police to his hideout. Akiteng’s arrest has sent shockwaves throughout the region, with many believing him to be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people in Northern Uganda.
Sgt. Shilaku James, Resident District Commissioner of Oyam district, confirmed that Akiteng was handed over to Nwoya Police and subsequently transferred to Kira Police headquarters in Kampala for further management of his case. This decision was made to prevent any potential tampering with the case in Nwoya district, ensuring that justice is served.
Benson Walter Dila, the LC5 chairperson of Oyam district, applauded the police and security forces for arresting the notorious witchdoctor. Dila urged complainants to pursue the case to ensure justice is served and cautioned Christians against believing in witchdoctors, advising them to seek help from God instead.
“This is a clear indication that security is committed to ensuring justice for all,” Dila said. “I urge the complainants to follow up on this case to its conclusion, and I caution the public against seeking help from witchdoctors. Instead, let us seek guidance from God through prayer and hard work.”
This is not Akiteng’s first run-in with the law, as he was previously jailed at Luzira Maximum Prison for human sacrifice. His latest arrest has sparked widespread relief, with many hoping that justice will finally be served.
