Kampala: The NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has flagged off 300 students for a 7-day Kiswahili study tour to Tanzania and Zanzibar. These students have been undergoing Kiswahili language training at the NRM headquarters, a program initiated in response to President Museveni’s call to advance the East African Federation. The flag-off ceremony took place at the Ministry of East African Community Affairs in Kingdom Kampala and was presided over by Hon. James Ikuya Magode, the Minister of State for East African Community Affairs.
Minister Magode emphasized that this initiative aims to immerse learners in a Kiswahili-speaking environment, thereby enhancing their language skills and proficiency. This aligns with the government’s broader vision to cultivate a Kiswahili-speaking culture within Uganda. The program, which began last year with 30 students, has rapidly grown, now boasting over 700 learners. The first cohort of students is set to graduate in September, with President Museveni expected to be the chief guest at the ceremony.
Kiswahili class coordinator, Steven Bwire, noted that the students have become competent in Kiswahili and are prepared to teach the language within their communities. In addition to language skills, the program includes training in patriotism and good governance. A 10-day retreat at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi has further equipped the learners for national service. Plans are underway to extend the program to other districts.
