Residents of Omwony-Cong Parish in Aremo Sub County, Omoro District, have taken a bold step towards reducing the rampant crime rate in their area. Following a security meeting, they have made over 10 resolutions aimed at promoting safety and security.
Some of the key resolutions include:
– Suspension of Night Business: No business will be allowed to operate beyond 10 pm.
– Identifying Narcotics Dealers: Efforts will be made to identify and address narcotics dealers in the area.
– Registering Visitors: Visitors to the area will be required to register.
– Suspending Gambling: Gambling activities will be suspended.
These resolutions come after a disturbing incident on Christmas Day, where unknown assailants stoned a UPDF officer on duty, prompting soldiers to retaliate against both the criminals and innocent civilians.
Kenneth Odyek, the LC3 Chairperson of Aremo Sub County, emphasized that the meeting aimed to identify and sensitize the youth before taking any severe action against them. However, Felex Anyuru, the LC2 Chairperson of Omwony-Cong Parish, cautioned against arresting suspected criminals without proper procedures.
Kinyera Dominic Obwoya, the directly elected LC3 councilor for Omwony-Cong, attributed the rising crime cases among young people to parental laxity. Alex Ojok, the LC1 Chairperson of Aremo Central Village, called for intervention from higher authorities to address the crimes committed by youths. Meanwhile, Alex Opito, a resident of Aremo Central Village, urged leaders to investigate the sources of narcotic drugs.
The community’s proactive approach to addressing crime is commendable, and their efforts to identify and address the root causes of crime are crucial in creating a safer environment for all.
