Looking at the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV) spanning 2025/26-2029/30, one can easily notice regional disparities that our leaders collectively need to address. Our region’s unique challenges, particularly food insecurity and limited economic opportunities, necessitate unwavering commitment from our Members of Parliament.
To bridge the regional development gaps, I suggest that we must prioritize investments in high-value crops such as cassava, coffee, cocoa, sesame, and bananas, which thrive in our region’s climate and offer better economic returns. Moreover, irrigation development is crucial to support crop production during dry seasons, reducing reliance on rainfall and enhancing food availability.
Our smallllholder farmers require support, including training, inputs, and market access, to compete with other regions.
Given the limited economic opportunities in our region, with only four enterprises identified for support, we must advocate for increased investments in agriculture. Tourism promotion is also vital, as our region boasts rich cultural heritage and natural attractions in West Nile, including our own district, Maracha. Infrastructure development, including upgrades to bridges, roads, and waterways, is essential for facilitating economic growth.
Furthermore, we need to push for more investment in education and increased government sponsorship opportunities for our students. Strategies for private sector investment should also be prioritized to drive job creation for our people.
These views and many more others can ensure that our region receives the support it needs to thrive and reduce the regional development gaps.
