The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has donated 30 tonnes of relief items, including 20 tonnes of maize flour and 10 tonnes of beans, to people affected by floods in Oyam district. The beneficiaries are from the sub-counties of Abok, Otwal, Iceme, and Ngai, which were affected by floods last year.
While flagging off the distribution of these items, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development Betty Amongi urged the District Disaster Committee to take quick intervention when disasters occur. She emphasized the importance of prompt reporting to facilitate timely government intervention.
Dr. Eunice Apio Otuku, Member of Parliament for Oyam North, expressed gratitude to the locals and leaders of Oyam for advocating for relief support. She encouraged the district disaster committee to speed up data collection for quicker government intervention and revealed plans to lobby for crop support for affected farmers to ensure sustainability.
Other leaders, including Oyam Woman Member of Parliament Santa Alum Ogwang and District LC5 Chairman Benson Dila, appreciated the government’s donation and cautioned beneficiaries against selling the food items. Geoffrey Ogwal, Oyam District Community Development Officer, noted that over 792 families from four sub-counties would benefit from the relief items, receiving 25.2 kg of maize and 12.6 kg of beans each.
Philips Ogile, Abok Sub-county LC3 Chairperson, praised the government for donating food items and assured proper distribution to reach the intended beneficiaries.
