Augustine Otuko, The Member of Parliament aspirant for the Ngariam County has cautioned voters against political violence ahead of the 2025 elections.
Speaking at multiple gatherings in Katakwi District, Otuko urged the electorate to uphold unity and distance themselves from political camps known for inciting violence.
Otuko expressed concern over Ngariam’s history of electoral unrest, describing it as a region that has experienced “chaos that resulted in bloodshed” during past elections. He vowed that this year’s campaign would be different.
“This election will be different from the past. We want to ensure a peaceful election, we are gatekeeping against violence,” Otuko said. “It is unfortunate that some desperate politicians have been celebrating at the expense of people’s blood.”
He emphasized that violence is a sign of indiscipline and encouraged voters to reject any politician who promotes hostility.
His remarks come amid rising tensions in Ngariam, with several reports of threats allegedly linked to the incumbent MP, Hon. Peter Ogwang. Notably, Ogwang is accused of issuing phone threats to the Town Clerk of Katakwi District following recent internal elections within the NRM party, where many of his allies lost.
While addressing congregants at Ocorimongin Church of Uganda, Aleles Catholic Church, and various villages in Katakwi Sub-County, Otuko appealed to both candidates and voters to protect the electorate.
“Voters have families and responsibilities. Candidates should be their shield, not their threat,” he said.
Otuko also expressed strong support for Vice President Jessica Alupo, who also serves as the Woman MP for Katakwi District. He urged voters to re-elect her, describing her as a source of pride and development for the district.
“We are proud of H.E. Alupo. As people of Katakwi, I plead that we vote her back. As an MP aspirant, I will continue to work closely with her to serve our people,” he added. “Those fighting Alupo are enemies of progress in Katakwi.”
Otuko previously served as the Private Secretary to the President for Political Affairs at State House. He is considered a strong contender in the upcoming NRM primaries scheduled for July 16, 2025, where he aims to unseat the embattled incumbent, Peter Ogwang, who is facing increasing criticism over alleged manipulative political tactics.
Having already picked up his nomination forms, Otuko continues to gain grassroots support across Ngariam County.
