In Rukungiri District, over 250 former opposition supporters from Nyarushanje and Nyakishenyi sub-counties in Rubabo County have officially joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government. The new members were welcomed by Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, the NRM chairperson for Rukungiri District and Minister for Security.
At ceremonies held at the Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje sub-county headquarters, Minister Muhwezi attributed the growing support for the NRM to its proven track record of service delivery. “Over the years, we’ve seen people cross to NRM because they’ve realized that other parties have little to offer,” he said, encouraging new members to focus on unity and avoid divisive politics that could hinder national progress.
Rukungiri Woman MP, Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, also applauded the new members for choosing to join a party committed to stability and development. “Thank you for coming home to a government and party that has fostered a peaceful environment where Ugandans can thrive and make informed decisions about their leaders,” she stated.
Resident District Commissioner Nsubuga Bewayon Stephen urged the newcomers, and all Ugandans, to seize the opportunities brought by the NRM’s peace-building efforts to improve their livelihoods.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Bosco Rwangugu and Victor Byamugisha announced their official commitment to the NRM, explaining that they now recognize the benefits of NRM policies and feel misled by the opposition’s leadership. Mobilization efforts to encourage this shift, particularly from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), were led by Mr. Sezi Kokunda Julius.
