Owanyi George Akuwan, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Nakapiripirit and Sub Dean of RDCs for the Karamoja region, has confirmed that he will not be running for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for Kasilo County in Serere District in the 2026-2031 Parliamentary elections.
After months of consultations, reflection, and prayer, Akuwan expressed his decision to take a sabbatical leave to dedicate himself fully to serving President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Government. He plans to focus on enhancing service delivery and contributing to the implementation of the NRM’s 2026-2031 manifesto aimed at improving the lives of Ugandans.
In his statement, Akuwan thanked his supporters in Kasilo, Serere, Teso, and across Uganda for their unwavering loyalty and support over the years. “It has been so humbling and I am grateful for all the trust placed in me,” he said.
Although Akuwan will not be pursuing the parliamentary seat, he emphasized that the voters in Kasilo County remain free to elect a representative of their choice. However, he strongly urged that voters cast their votes for President Museveni in the upcoming elections, referring to this as “ring-fencing” the presidential vote in favor of the current leader.
As RDC of Nakapiripirit and a key figure in the Karamoja region, Akuwan’s decision is seen as a significant moment in local and national politics, particularly as Uganda approaches the 2026 elections.
The people of Kasilo now look ahead to the electioneering period, with many speculating on who will step up to challenge for the vacant MP seat.
Akuwan’s commitment to national service marks a notable shift in his political journey, one that prioritizes broader service over local electoral ambitions.
