Police authorities in Pakwach District have seized two box body trucks loaded with over 500 bags of charcoal. The trucks, bearing registration numbers UBK 915 B and UBG 755 V, were intercepted during a meticulously planned intelligence-led operation by joint security agencies targeting the illegal charcoal trade in the district.
Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Eseru Paul, renowned as “Small Body Big Engine” for his swift and decisive actions, disclosed that the authorities possess detailed information and evidence on how these charcoal dealers have managed to circumvent security checks. “We even know the landing sites where these individuals load their supplies, including the notorious racket. However, we will not permit these operatives to defy the President’s Executive Order,” Eseru asserted.
Four suspects have been arrested and are slated to face legal proceedings, with their cases being forwarded to court for determination. Eseru highlighted that similar operations in the past have proven effective. In February 2024, another prominent charcoal dealer was apprehended, charged in court, and the confiscated charcoal was auctioned per court directives.
This enforcement action is in strict adherence to the President’s Executive Order No.3, issued in May 2023, which prohibits commercial charcoal trade in Northern Uganda to address the rapid environmental degradation. Pakwach authorities remain resolute in upholding this ban to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable practices in the region.
