Moroto, Uganda: Shock and fear grip residents of Nangorit village in Nadunget sub-county, Moroto district, as the discovery of a decomposing body sends waves of terror through the community. The victim, identified as Richard Enyegu, a primary school teacher, was found dead, his body decaying in the village.
Michael Longole, the Karamoja regional police spokesperson, confirmed the grim incident, revealing that joint security forces comprising the police and the army have initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators. Longole urged community members to come forward with any information that could aid in apprehending the culprits.
The brutal killing has further rattled teachers in Karamoja, who are already reeling from a series of similar attacks. Oriokot, the head teacher of Loputuk primary school, recounted Enyegu’s disappearance after he set out to Moroto town to retrieve his stolen belongings. Tragically, he never returned.
The discovery of Enyegu’s decomposing body, missing an arm and a leg, has sent shockwaves across the region. This incident adds to a string of targeted attacks on teachers in Karamoja. In 2023, a teacher was fatally shot in Moroto district, while another educator fell victim to gunfire in Karita town council, Amudat district. Just a month later, another teacher was gunned down in Kaabong while returning to school from his hometown.
These relentless attacks have paralyzed the teaching community in Karamoja, leaving educators and residents alike in a state of fear and uncertainty. The escalating violence targeting teachers underscores a pressing need for enhanced security measures and community vigilance in the region.
As authorities intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, residents remain on edge, grappling with the stark reality of violence that has gripped their community. The tragic loss of Richard Enyegu serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for decisive action to address the security challenges facing Karamoja.
