Parish Chiefs and PDM SACCO leaders involved in extortion and manipulation of beneficiary lists are facing severe consequences, including loss of position. This comes after a monitoring visit by Kumi Resident District Commissioner, Ahamada Washaki, revealed widespread extortion and list tampering in various parts of his district
According to RDC Washaki’s report, some Parish Chiefs and PDM SACCO leaders have been extorting money from beneficiaries, fixing non-SACCO members on the beneficiaries’ lists, and even threatening victims not to report them.
However, thanks to the vigilance of Ariet PDM SACCO leaders and members, who stood firm to correct the list of beneficiaries, the tide is turning against these corrupt leaders
The government has emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the Parish Development Model (PDM) implementation. The PDM aims to lift 39% of households from subsistence to money economy, contributing to Uganda’s Vision 2040.
The vigilance of community members, like those in Ariet, is crucial in ensuring the success of PDM. By reporting corruption and standing against extortion, communities can:
– Prevent misallocation of funds
– Ensure benefits reach intended beneficiaries
– Promote accountability among leaders
As the government continues to implement PDM, it is essential to address challenges and ensure effective oversight mechanisms are in place. By working together, Ugandans can build a more transparent and accountable society.
