Agago – Police in Agago district have arrested and detained two primary school teachers of Leader Primary School for excessively taking drugs and causing confusion at school.
The teachers, Joseph Odoch and Denis Obonyo, were taken into custody on Thursday morning under the directive of the school headteacher Charles Obwoch.
Obwoch said that on Wednesday, he confirmed the two teachers brought alcohol and other drugs to school and influemced other staff to consume. On Thursday morning both teachers reported to school drunk and confused as an effect of the drugs and alcohol consumed.
Their behavior included snatching examination scripts from learners divulging answer aloud, and using explicit language in the presence of learners.
John Ocaya a concerned parent, highlighted that it is not proper for teachers to use inappropriate language in the community. He criticized their conduct as a disgrace to their profession.
Ocaya noted that owner of local business had collectively decided not to sell Alcohol to these teachers due to their behavior, unfortunately they played a trick of having others purchase Alcohol on their behalf from elsewhere.
Luke Okidi,  the chairperson of the school management Committee, expressed serious concern about the teachers’ conduct. He confirmed that the matter had been reported to the district education officer as he argued that the teachers should be held by the rule of law.
The teachers were taken to Patongo police station, where a case was registered under SD16/17/18/2023.
The Agago district Police Commander, ASP Brain Ampaire warned all the teachers against alcoholism and drug abuse because it will affect the learning process of pupils.
Leader primary school, situated in Lira Palwo sub county, is a government aided school with an enrollment of 620 pupils. In the last primary leaving examinations none of the 78 candidates received a first grade.
