Public has been warned to be vigilant amidst the escalating cases of gangs on motorcycles who attack unsuspecting pedestrians and rob them off their properties in several parts of Kampala Metropolitan catchment.
Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire disclosed that they have registered a huge rise in cases of muggings especially in Kawempe Division, Kampala City.
“Most of the suspects who were arrested and produced to court have always been released on bail after either six or eight months and we believe that this are the same groups that return to the streets to curry out the theft.” he said.
“On Saturday, one suspect was killed by the mob justice after injuring and robbing off two pedestrians in Kawenpe while other two fled.”
The police annual report indicates that in 2022, 6,854 robbery cases were reported compared to 5,275 cases reported in 2021.
Simple robbery cases were 4338 while aggravated robbery complaints stopped at 2,516.
By the end of 2022, out of the total cases of robberies reported to police, 1,831 cases were produced to court, 224 did not go beyond police, while 4799 remained under inquiry.
