In his address yesterday in Kaberamaido, President Yoweri Museveni emphasized the importance of wealth creation, asserting that the initiative began long before independence and was rooted in the need for socio-economic transformation. He identified “politics of identity” as a significant barrier to progress, urging a shift toward “politics of interest” to facilitate economic development.
Museveni illustrated his point with the example of his work as a cattle keeper, stating that he does not concern himself with the tribe of his milk buyers. Instead, he focuses on monetary transactions. He expressed disappointment that past leaders did not heed his calls for socio-economic transformation, which prompted him and his colleagues to launch the National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle to free Ugandans from detrimental political practices.
Following the NRA’s ascent to power, Museveni undertook a detailed analysis of how to uplift Ugandans, identifying four key sectors for economic growth:
1. Commercial agriculture
2. Manufacturing
3. Services (including health and legal services)
4. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
The president highlighted the potential of the manufacturing sector, referencing the transformation of previously underutilized land in Mbale into an industrial area that has created jobs for the youth in Bugisu. While noting that Uganda’s civil service employs approximately 400,000 people, he emphasized that industrialization could significantly increase employment opportunities, particularly in agriculture. He pointed out that agriculture offers a viable path for even those with limited capital or formal education.
Museveni distinguished between intensive agriculture, which maximizes output from smaller plots of land, and extensive agriculture, which requires larger areas. He also called for strict accountability in the Parish Development Model program, stressing that those who misappropriate funds should face consequences.
Encouraging the adoption of irrigation techniques to boost agricultural productivity, Museveni cited the success of Dr. Muranga in Bushenyi, who achieved a tenfold increase in banana production using irrigation compared to her non-irrigating neighbors.
The president concluded his tour of the Teso sub-region with a mega rally at Kaberamaido Primary School. This marked the final day of his visit, which ended on Wednesday, November 20.
