In a decisive move, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Alex Kakooza as the new Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives (MTIC), drops Geraldine Ssali. This shake-up comes in the wake of Ssali’s recent arrest and charges related to financial misconduct.
Geraldine Ssali, the embattled former Permanent Secretary, was arrested on July 16th on allegations of causing financial loss and conspiring with members of parliament to embezzle cooperative funds. Her tenure at the MTIC has been marred by controversy, culminating in her ousting and subsequent legal troubles.
Alex Kakooza brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Principal Private Secretary to Vice President Jessica Alupo and formerly as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by President Museveni to restore stability and integrity to the MTIC amidst the ongoing scandal.
Minister Francis Mwebesa expressed confidence in Kakooza’s capabilities, highlighting his proven track record in public administration. “Mr. Kakooza’s experience and dedication to public service make him the ideal candidate to steer the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives through this challenging period. We look forward to his leadership in driving our trade and industrial policies forward,” Mwebesa stated.
Kakooza’s appointment is part of President Museveni’s broader effort to ensure effective governance and accountability within key government ministries. As he steps into his new role, Kakooza is expected to prioritize transparency and efficiency, aiming to restore confidence in the MTIC and foster economic growth.
