In a move aimed at ensuring stability and continuity in statistical leadership, President Yoweri Museveni has extended the tenure of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza. The decision, signed on January 18, 2024, extends Mukiza’s term for another five years, solidifying his position at the helm of the bureau until January 18, 2029.

Mukiza, who assumed the role of Executive Director on March 30, 2019, has been instrumental in steering UBOS through various challenges and milestones. Under his leadership, UBOS has witnessed significant achievements, cementing its role as the country’s primary source of statistical data.

The announcement of Mukiza’s reappointment was met with widespread acclaim from UBOS, with the board, management, and staff extending their congratulations. In a statement released today, UBOS hailed Mukiza’s reappointment as a testament to his exemplary leadership and dedication to the bureau’s mission.

“This reappointment is a testament of faith, confidence, and support that Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Hon. Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development and the Board of Uganda Bureau of Statistics have bestowed upon you,” the statement read.

Dr. Chris Mukiza, a seasoned statistician with a wealth of experience, is not new to UBOS. Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, Mukiza served in various capacities within the bureau, including Director Macro-economic Statistics and Principal Statistician. His academic credentials, including a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton and a Master’s degree in Economics from Makerere University, underscore his expertise in the field.

The renewal of Mukiza’s contract comes at a crucial juncture as UBOS gears up for the upcoming national census scheduled to commence on May 10, 2024. With preparations in full swing, Mukiza’s continued leadership ensures a seamless transition and steadfast guidance during this critical period.

As the third Executive Director of UBOS, Mukiza inherits a legacy of dedication to producing accurate and reliable statistical data. His commitment to excellence and vision for the bureau’s future position UBOS on a trajectory towards becoming a world-class national statistics office.

In extending Dr. Chris Mukiza’s term, President Museveni reaffirms his commitment to fostering stability and continuity within Uganda’s statistical landscape. With Mukiza at the helm, UBOS remains poised to uphold its mandate of providing timely, relevant, and high-quality statistical information for informed decision-making and national development.
