Museveni’s letter to Gen Jeje Odongo on May 2, 2024, requested credible data from British authorities to confirm Speaker Anita Among’s alleged UK properties. He recounted his conversation with UK envoy Kate Airey, who cited Among’s UK houses and bank accounts for her children’s schooling as grounds for sanctions.
“I told her that the issue of houses would be very interesting if, especially, Anita Among did not declare them in her Leadership Code documents. If she had declared them, then the next issue would be how she got the money to build them. If these two are answered correctly and showing no mistake, the remaining issue would be political, ideological judgement,” said Museveni.
Andrew Mitchell, Deputy Foreign Secretary, announced travel bans and asset freezes for Among, Agnes Nandutu, and Gorreti Kitutu. Among dismissed the sanctions, asserting she owned nothing in the UK, and urged respect for Uganda’s sovereignty.
Museveni questioned the necessity for Ugandan leaders to invest abroad, emphasizing Uganda’s developmental needs. He directed the IGG and Minister of Integrity to confirm Among’s declaration of her UK properties in her Leadership Code forms.
“The issue of bank accounts I told the High Commissioner may not be a serious issue if she sent legitimately earned money to support the children who are, legitimately, studying there,” Museveni noted. He sought legal advice on the sanctions’ legitimacy and external interference in Uganda’s internal affairs.
