As Uganda heads to the general election period, President Towers Kaguta Museveni the Chairman of the National Resistance Party (NRM) has called on the citizens to massively participate in the update of the voter register by the electoral Commission.
The President in his letter to the National Resistance Movement Party (NRM) leaders country wide, the National Executive Committee (NEC), the Central Executive Committee (CEC), carders and party mobilizers encouraged them to engage the voters to turn up for the activity set to begin in late January.
“In preparation for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission released a Roadmap wherein the update of the National Voters Register will commence soon, I urge all of you to reach our voters and encourage them to participate in the exercise”, read the letter.
Adding, “he update exercise will be conducted at update stations throughout Uganda, starting from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, on each of the appointed dates, including weekends”
The Electoral Commission is mandated under Article 61 (1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995, (as amended), and Sections 18 and 20 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 140) to compile, maintain, revise, and update the National Voters Register.
However, this exercise has been rescheduled and will now commence on 20th January 2025, and conclude on 10th February 2025.
The purpose of the update exercise is to:
Enable eligible Ugandan citizens of 18 years and above, who are not yet registered as voters, to do so;
Enable registered voters who wish to transfer to new voting locations, to apply for such transfer;
Enable registered voters to check and confirm that their particulars are correct and appear on the Voters Register at the voting locations that they indicated during registration; and,
Enable students who were registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and have since attained the age of 18 years to present their particulars, that is, the National Identification Number (NIN), for updating and assignment of a polling station within their parish of residence or origin.
