    SERERE, 14 August 2024

In the heart of Teso, a land renowned for its resilience and cultural richness, there emerged a star in the making, a leader by birth—a woman whose journey from the humble origins of a fishmonger’s daughter to a formidable force in Ugandan politics is nothing short of extraordinary.

Hon. Hellen Adoa Abeku, the Minister of State for Fisheries and the proud representative of Serere District’s women, embodies the spirit of tenacity, dedication, and servant leadership. Her story is not just a personal triumph but a signal to the power of education, community support, and unwavering resolve.

The Early Years: Humble Beginnings to High Aspirations

Born in Olep village, Akuja Parish, Kyere in Serere district, Hellen Adoa’s upbringing was steeped in adversity. The third of nine children, she navigated the challenges of poverty and the aftermath of conflict that ravaged Teso with a resolve that would later define her leadership.

Her academic journey began at Kelim Primary School, where mangoes, roasted cassava, and potatoes were a serious meal through the day.

She continued through Ngora Girls’ Secondary School and culminated at Ngora High School, where she earned her Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education.

Despite the odds, Adoa’s pursuit of knowledge was relentless. She went on to obtain two diplomas—one in Business Studies from Victoria Business Institute in Tororo and another in Education Management from Uganda Martyrs University. Her thirst for knowledge didn’t end there; she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Democracy and Development Studies and later, a Master’s in Local Governance and Human Rights, both from Uganda Martyrs University.

A Heart for Philanthropy: Building the Future

Adoa’s personal experiences, shaped by the struggles of her early life, ignited a deep passion for philanthropy. She devoted herself to uplifting the underprivileged, particularly in education—a sector she recognized as pivotal in breaking the cycle of poverty.

With modest savings and support from friends, Adoa embarked on a mission to transform lives through education.

She established a network of schools across Teso, including Halcyon High School Soroti, Halcyon High School in Ocaapa, Halcyon High School in Serere, Teso Boarding Primary School, and Toto Adoa Nursery & Primary School in Kyere. These institutions have become sanctuaries of learning, offering quality education and sponsorships to countless children, many of whom might otherwise have been left behind.

Adoa’s vision was clear: to create opportunities where none existed, ensuring that every child in Teso had a chance to succeed.

Beyond education, Adoa recognized the health challenges women and children faced in her community. After establishing schools, she initiated health camps, focusing on cervical cancer, children’s health, and prostate cancer. She moved throughout Serere, testing and treating people, directly impacting and improving lives.

As of today, Adoa has supported over 70 women and 70 youth groups, not forgetting the farmer groups too.

Her support for churches and mosques is genuine—she is also a synod member at the Church of Uganda. When you meet Hon Adoa with Catholics, Anglicans, Born-Agains, or Muslims, it’s hard to discern her religion, as her dedication crosses all boundaries.

At The Political Arena: A Resilient Leader

In the political atmosphere of Teso, Hellen Adoa’s rise is nothing short of a phenomenon. Teso, particularly Serere and Soroti districts, had long been bastions of opposition power, with figures like Alice Alaso, Stephen Ochola, and Elijah Okupa holding sway. Adoa’s first foray into politics in 2011 ended in defeat, but she was undeterred. She remained steadfast, and in 2016, she made a triumphant comeback, defeating Alice Alaso and turning the tide in favor of the ruling NRM party. Her victory was not just a personal achievement but a symbolic reclamation of Teso’s political allegiance.

Adoa’s truthfulness, dedication, and connection with the people had earned her their trust, and they rallied behind her in overwhelming support.

Today, Hellen Adoa stands as a key figure in reinforcing the NRM’s presence in Teso, a region that had once seemed impenetrable to the ruling party.

A Leader for All: Beyond Political Boundaries

Hellen Adoa’s influence extends far beyond political affiliations. She is a unifying figure whose work and impact are recognized across the political spectrum. Her leadership is characterized by humility, accessibility, and a deep commitment to her constituents. Whether through her efforts in public service, health, education, or advocacy, Adoa has consistently demonstrated a servant-leadership style that resonates with people from all walks of life. Her ability to transcend political divides, earning respect and admiration from allies and opponents alike, is a rare and invaluable trait in the often divisive world of politics.

Personal Life: A Pillar of Family and Community

Away from the public eye, Hellen Adoa is a devoted wife and mother. She is married to Denis Abeku, and together they are blessed with six children—four girls and two boys—who are undoubtedly the center of her world.

Adoa’s ability to balance the demands of public service with her responsibilities as a mother and wife is a signal to her strength and resilience. Her family is her foundation, providing her with the support and stability needed to navigate the challenges of her political career.

On the Social Scene: An Innovator in Tradition

On the social scene, Hon. Hellen Adoa is also recognized for her cultural impact. She is the first Teso MP to introduce the idea of mourners sitting on chairs during burials in other words the ideology of tents and chairs —a trend that has since gone viral across all constituencies in Teso. This innovation reflects her unique ability to blend tradition with modern convenience, making a lasting impression on the cultural practices of her community.

The Future: Destined for Greater Heights

As the NRM party primaries approach next year, Hellen Adoa’s unopposed emergence is a clear signal of the undefined confidence of her constituents in her leadership. As she prepares for the upcoming elections, Adoa is not just readying herself for another term in Parliament; she is preparing to continue her mission of service to the people of Serere and beyond. Her legacy is already being written—one of dedication, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to the betterment of her people.

Hellen Adoa: The Quintessential Servant Leader

In Hellen Adoa, Teso has found a treasure—a leader whose life’s work exemplifies the true essence of servant leadership. Her journey from the rural corridors of Teso to the corridors of power is a powerful narrative of perseverance, hope, and the transformative power of education and community support. As she continues to serve and uplift her people, Hellen Adoa remains an inspiring figure, a role model, and hope for generations to come.

Come 2026, Adoa is primed to sail through with a landslide.
