In an effort to address challenges faced by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kaberamaido District during the 2021 elections, Assistant Resident District Commissioners Peter Arikos and Rashid Adakun, alongside the NRM District Registrar Isaac Ojade, convened a meeting with youth leaders from the four parishes of Aperikira Sub-County. The meeting, held at Aperikira Catholic Church, aimed to address grievances and strategize for improved performance in the 2026 elections.
The youth leaders highlighted their frustrations with delayed financial support from the party, which they believe influenced their decision to vote for the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate at the sub-county level. Isaac Epidu, the Sub-County Youth Chairperson, expressed optimism about the dialogue, stating, “Youth are often impatient, but such engagements can harmonize differences. By 2026, we are ready to rally behind the NRM flag bearers. However, we need to ensure youth are not exploited as stepping stones for others’ ambitions.”
District Registrar Isaac Ojade expressed disappointment at the youth’s decision to vote for the NUP candidate in previous elections, urging them to focus on supporting the party’s initiatives. He emphasized the importance of attending skill training programs and making informed decisions in upcoming party primaries, scheduled to begin in January 2025 from the grassroots to the national level.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner Rashid Adakun underscored the need for a mindset change among the youth, citing a successful youth group in Olabo Village that has collectively invested in goat farming, now owning over 80 goats. He encouraged similar productive ventures to promote self-reliance.
Peter Arikos, another Assistant Resident District Commissioner, reiterated the NRM’s commitment to youth empowerment. He urged the youth to embrace a culture of saving and avoid unproductive activities like excessive spending on leisure. “Start small but think big,” he advised, sharing his own story of perseverance and faith as a source of inspiration.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from the NRM leadership to work closely with the youth, fostering initiatives that align with their aspirations and ensuring their active participation in the party’s activities. This renewed collaboration aims to strengthen the party’s grassroots support in Aperikira Sub-County as it prepares for the 2026 general elections.
