OPINION:Political organizations thrive on diverse opinions and debates. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) should embrace current discussions on various national issues to strengthen democracy and improve citizens’ lives. Effective democracy encourages debate, allowing political organizations to maintain power by fostering internal conversations that guide policy and government actions. Unfortunately, this critical aspect of NRM’s identity has faded, risking an identity crisis.
Currently, NRM’s failure to facilitate internal conversations and address divergent opinions has made the party appear disjointed and reactionary. Government dominates policy setting and implementation without adequate political oversight, leaving the party vulnerable. NRM must reclaim its role by building a strong connection with the government and addressing frustrations with corruption and unfulfilled promises.
New formations are emerging, expressing alternative opinions aligned with NRM but highlighting dissatisfaction with government performance. These groups could become significant opposition if not engaged openly. To remain relevant, NRM must engage with changing demographics, embrace internal debates, and lead the fight against corruption. Leadership is crucial in envisioning a shared future of prosperity.
Moreover, the original ideology of NRA/M has weakened due to the actions of various leaders and the opportunists. Political and religious leaders, along with societal dynamics, have contributed to placing individuals with lower capacities in high positions, often driven by personal and group interests. Knowledgeable individuals are sometimes relegated to secondary roles or overlooked entirely being looked at as. a threat and being called spies This practice undermines the ideology built over years, raising the question of whether being wise and clear-headed in NRM is seen as a threat. Those who are wise often suffer under shallow-minded cadres, weakening the party’s ideological foundation. Addressing this issue is essential for NRM to reclaim its strength and uphold its principles.
