The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has expressed profound sorrow and outrage following the brutal murder of senior colleague Dr. Wilfred Olila.
Dr. Olila’s lifeless body was discovered by Otuboi Police, abandoned by the roadside. He was reportedly brutalized and left for dead, with a UMA T-shirt as the only means of identification.
A graduate of Makerere University, Dr. Olila obtained his MBChB in 1984 and later earned an MMed in ENT from the same institution in 2008. His illustrious career spanned clinical practice, private health initiatives, and academia, where he served as a dedicated lecturer at Soroti University.
In a statement released by the Uganda Medical Association National Executive Committee (NEC), the association condemned the heinous act and demanded answers.
“This act of brutality against a healer who selflessly dedicated his life to saving others is a grave injustice. The Uganda Medical Association strongly condemns this cowardly and senseless attack, which is not only an affront to Dr. Olila’s memory but also to the noble values of the medical profession—compassion, service, and selflessness,” the statement read.
The UMA NEC further called for swift action from law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. “We demand thorough investigations into this despicable crime. The continued targeting of doctors must end, and concrete measures must be put in place to protect medical professionals, who serve as a lifeline for countless citizens.”
Dr. Olila was hailed as a visionary leader, a compassionate healer, and a passionate educator who touched many lives during his career. His passing is an irreplaceable loss to the medical community and the nation at large.
The UMA extended its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Olila’s family, friends, and colleagues. “Our hearts go out to his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We mourn a remarkable treasure lost far too soon.”
Dr Edwin Onyango Ouma the association chairperson for Teso chapter reaffirmed their commitment to standing in solidarity with medical professionals across the country to demand respect, protection, and justice for those who dedicate their lives to saving others.
By press time police had not yet released the statement while the body had been taken to Kaberamaido hospital mortuary.
