In a dramatic turn of events, Serere District’s barefoot footballers triumphed over the heavily favored Wakiso District, clinching a 1-0 victory in the 2024 Under-14 National Primary Schools Football Championship. The tournament, held in Soroti, saw 116 districts from across Uganda compete for the national title, but it was Serere’s heart and determination that led them to victory.
Facing off against teams equipped with professional football boots, Serere’s players demonstrated that skill and grit could overcome even the most well-prepared opponents. Despite the disadvantage of playing without boots, their teamwork, speed, and perseverance proved unstoppable. This hard-fought win earned Serere the prestigious opportunity to represent Uganda in the upcoming East African Games.
The championship not only showcased Serere’s athletic potential but also drew attention to the team’s lack of proper sports gear. As the district prepares for the East African Games, efforts are underway to provide these young champions with the equipment they need to compete on an even playing field at the international level.
