The Teso Sub-region, particularly Serere district, is witnessing a heated political landscape as four women vie for the position of Woman Member of Parliament, posing a challenge to the incumbent, Helen Adoa Abeku. Among the candidates, Esther Achom, also known as Ajokotau, is gaining significant attention for her bid to represent the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Achom, a 40-year-old professional accountant from Kateta Sub-County, aims to improve the livelihoods of women and focus on health and unity in the district.

Achom’s experience working with local communities since 2012 has equipped her with the necessary background to serve effectively. Her recent declaration of candidacy at a funeral in Kangodo cell has energized her supporters, making her a formidable challenger to the incumbent. Hellen Adoa Abeku, the current State Minister for Agriculture in charge of Lakes and Fisheries, has been in Parliament for ten years, having previously defeated Alice Alaso in contentious battles for the seat in 2016 and 2021.

However, some constituents are questioning Adoa’s desire to continue serving, given that she had requested and been granted two terms during her initial campaign. Ekwangu from Igola posed the question, “What does she still want?”
Additionally, Ekwangu’s concerns about Hellen Adoa Abeku’s leadership have sparked a heated debate. “Even with the powers given to her, all that has been seen is nothing but political interest,” Ekwangu noted. “Giving out Gomesi and commanding the beating of people on the lakes is not what we sent her for,” Ekwangu added, highlighting the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of their constituents over personal gain.
With other candidates like Margaret Opol and Florence Iyogil also seeking the NRM flag, the race is expected to be competitive, particularly between Acom and Abeku, given Acom’s growing popularity among the electorate.
