The Office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Soroti District launched an operation dubbed “Push Learners to Class” on Monday. The initiative aimed to ensure that learners reported to school on the first day of the term. Three teams, comprising officers from the Education Department and the RDC’s office, traversed the three counties of Soroti, monitoring school reporting and arresting parents who deliberately kept their children from attending school.
According to Resident District Commissioner Eseru Paul, the teams arrested seven individuals, including a teacher, for sabotaging Universal Primary Education (UPE) in the district. This move comes after Soroti District recorded a dismal performance last year, with only 40 pupils achieving Division One and over 852 scoring Division U.
The operation was led by three teams, each responsible for a different county. Team One, comprising Ag. Inspector of Schools Hellen Mildred, Assistant RDC Emmanuel Okia, and RDC, monitored schools in Gweri County. Team Two, led by Assistant RDC Mutai Victor, focused on Soroti County, while Team Three, headed by Deputy RDC Ronald Bakak, covered Dakabela County.
The initiative is a step in the right direction, aiming to address the challenges facing UPE in Soroti District. By ensuring that learners attend school, the district hopes to improve its education outcomes and provide a brighter future for its children.
